Hanna Tähti, Professor Emerita Hanna Tähti, Ph.D., prof. has a long experience in the field of toxicology, especially in the development of alternative methods for animal experimentation. She has done research in toxicology in the Medical School of the University of Tampere since 1973, and for some years she has also worked in pharmaceutical industry (Leiras, Tampere) as toxicologist. Together with Professor Timo Ylikomi she has established a Cell Research Centre in the Medical School at the University of Tampere in 1999. The role of the centre is to develop and validate new cell culture models for in vitro toxicology and for drug development. She has been leading research to develop methods for the safety evaluation of drugs and chemicals in vitro. The current research projects deal with developing an in vitro blood-brain barrier model for the evaluation of drug effects on the central nervous system, and a 3-dimensional model for the evaluation of the metabolism-induced toxicity in the target cells. She has been EUROTOX executive committee member 1997-2003, and she was one of the organizers (secretary general) of International Congress of Toxicology, ICT X 2004 in Tampere. She has been the chairman of Fincopa since its establishment (2003 in Tampere) until 2007, and still continues to be Fincopa board delegate.
